Michael Portillo at Tilbury

Great British Railway Journeys

Michael Portillo on his way to Tilbury
BBC

On 29th January, the BBC showed an episode of Great British Railway Journeys in which Michael Portillo visited Tilbury. He talked with Jonathan Catton, Thurrock’s Heritage Officer about the early days of the railway in Tilbury and its influence on the establishment of the docks. Portillo then had a go at loading a container on to a freight wagon. Finally, we saw him take the ferry to Gravesend.

If you missed the programme, it is available on the BBC web site.

Following the programme, the ERO added a blog page that includes pictures and maps of the railways, fort and docks.
