Good Friday - Walk of Witness

Good Friday - Walk of Witness

Every year on Good Friday at Easter the church would walk round Canberra Square in a procession and it was called the Walk of Witness. They would carry the St. John’s church banner and the vicar would lead the procession.

  • I’m in this photo, walking infront of my mother who was pushing my brother Adrian in his pram. My aunt Jess is stood at her open door, number 11. My parents were Bill and Florrie George and we lived at 13 Canberra Square. I believe this to be 1964.

  • Every year on good friday, rain or shine, the PLA police would stretch chains across the junction of our road, Peninsula Road, and nearby Orient Road with Ferry Road…vehicles were still able to come and go, but for the morning there would be this chain across the road and a PLA policeman in attandance.
