Tilbury Football 1955-56

Here are a few photos of my time at Tilbury Football Club where I was the reserve team goalkeeper. The Committee photos were taken after a successful season and includes my father Dick Downey, who received an award from Essex Football Association for forty years service to the club.Tilbury enjoyed success in the FA Cup reaching the  first round proper on two occasions against Notts County (including Tommy Lawton) and Stoke City.To my knowledge at least two players went on to pro leagues. John Evans to Liverpool and Reg. Webb to Charlton Athletic.

  • My Grandfather Malcolm Lawson is in this picture. He is 89 years old now and still lives in Tilbury. He was offered a contract with Nottingham Forest but turned it down as it wasn’t well paid, a truly different time. Another one from this squad who could have gone pro.
