St. Chad's school playground

By Annie O'Brien

This photo was sent to the site by John Green and he writes that his mother in law;

"was a lifetime Tilbury resident and going through her effects we have come across a few newspaper cuttings of people/events in Tilbury and this photo (attached) which I have no information on. I wondered if it would be any good for the site. It was taken in the playground of St Chads and my mother in law Jean Green nee Wakeman is in the front row , third from the right. She was born in 1931 and looks mid teens here so photo could be post 1945 but other than that I have no idea. I wondered whether anyone out there would recognise anyone in it."

It is about 1946/7, a group of Tilbury Girls' Brigade. I am in the middle row, second from right and my friend Doreen Driscoll is immediately behind me. I was then Joyce Pidgeon.

Hi Joyce, the girl sitting in front second from left is my mum, Mary Marr, she used to live at 39 Gainsborough Ave.

The lady in  the middle,obviously the leader, was Mrs Montgomery who was very active with Civil Defence during and after the war. I remember her living in a prefab in Kelvin Road and she had two red setter dogs
