Victorian Freemasonry and the Building of Tilbury Docks is a recent book about Tilbury and the building of the docks by Richard Burrell. The book describes how and why the Tilbury Docks were built. Seven of the people who built the docks were Freemasons who founded a new lodge. While building the docks, these Freemasons became involved in a dispute which brought the mighty East & West India Docks Company to its knees.

Richard Burrell will be at the Thurrock Local History Book Fair at the Thameside Library from 10.00 to 12.00 on 21st November to sign copies of the book. It normally costs £12.99, but you can obtain a copy for the special price of £9.99 at the fair.

“An excellent example of a local history study”, Jonathan Catton, Thurrock’s Heritage Officer.

This book is a first class Christmas present for anyone interested in Tilbury and Thurrock local history.

The book fair has been organised by Grays Library and will include other local authors including a stall dedicated to the celebrated Victorian scientist, Alfred Russel Wallace who wrote his most important book while living in Grays.
