  • Tarpon Sealane was once a well kept vessel. I joined that ship as an A.B a few days before she sailed out of Curacao drydock after repairs on her number four (4) hatch and cover from the accident in Panama. I always wondered what happened to her after I left the company. Thanks for your info., even though I’m sad to know she ended up in a scrap yard. Fond memories. Her original colours were: White Superstructure. Grey and Red below. I’ll post a photo in the future.

  • Bit of a mystery ship and also one whose successive owners apparently economised on paint.

Built in Greece in 1973 as the Greek-owned bulk carrier TARPON SEALANE, it had several owners and names over the years, with most changes in the 1990s. My comment about paint relates to each of its later names … 1996 MCL SEALANE, 1996 SEALANE, 1997 ALAN, 1998 LAND. In Jack’s photo, which clearly showing the name, LAN looks OK but a D has been crudely painted on the end. Its mystery owners came on the scene in June 1998 when the vessel was renamed LAND (20,813 tons gross, 37,446 deadweight) and hoisted the flag of Bolivia. It did not last long, and maybe Jack can confirm that the vessel was at the scrap metal berth in Tilbury (where some ships have berthed to load scrap for their last voyage to the scrapyard). LAND went off to Alang, India, where it arrived in mid-September to be scrapped.
