Heritage Open Day 2007

Historic buses from the Castle Point Transport Museum

This photo shows two buses that were at the Heritage Open Day in September 2007. They are parked outside near the old railway Tilbury Riverside station social club. Does anyone remember these buses in Tilbury and going to the ferry on one?

The buses were supplied by the Castle Point Transport Museum for the day.

  • I certainly remember the buses route numbers. The 53 had two destinations.  One was to Clacton and the other was one of the longest routes in the country, 85 miles from Tilbury to Harwich and this route was used by the ship’s pilots to get back to their base at Harwich.  The 40 route ran to Brentwood  via Grays and North and South Ockendon.  The most frequent route to Tilbury Ferry was the 37A which ran from Grays about every 10 minutes and this became the 370 to Romford after London Transport took over from Eastern National in 1951.  To get to the ferry I used to get on the 37A at Cowper Avenue stop in Feenan Highway
